This is a tinker's "pig" with 9 tinsmith's tools inside. The pig measures 19 1/2" by 7" by 4 1/2". It was made in about 1850. It has remnants of black lacquer on the exterior and loops of tin where leather straps were strung for carrying.

The tinker's pig is a portable work box carried by a traveling tinsmith who repaired household items. He  could travel by wagon making tin household items and selling and repairing damaged objects. I have included 9 tools that would have traveled in this small work chest.
