OVEDA MAURER
      FOLK ART ANTIQUES

The plate shown is typical of nineteenth century Pennsylvania redware. Redware, pewter, wood, iron and later tin made up most of the usual household's utensils. Redware is a soft ceramic and almost always shows much wear. The plate measures 9" diameter by 1 1/2"deep. The coggled edge is often found in Pennsylvania redware. The slip decoration was an added cost.

The reverse side of this plate shows a black patina from the numerous trips into the kitchen ovens. The concave area is where a piece of clay came off the plate during the molding of the clay.
