The plate shown is typical of nineteenth century Pennsylvania redware. Redware, pewter, wood, iron and later tin made up most of the usual household's utensils. Redware is a soft ceramic and almost always shows much wear. The plate measures 9" diameter by 1 1/2"deep. The coggled edge is often found in Pennsylvania redware. The slip decoration was an added cost.
