This pair of brass camphine  lamps is a lovely example of mid 19th century (about 1850). They are in very good shape and are complete. The lamps measure 10" tall.

Camphine burners differ from whale oil burners because it was found that camphine lamps exploded when the flame got close to the reservoir of fluid.

Burning fluid lamps improved the efficiency of lamps. There were many mixtures used. They were hazardous to use. The change in burner construction and design helped overcome this problem. The small metal caps helped keep the fluid from evaporating as well as to extinguish the flame.
