OVEDA MAURER
      FOLK ART ANTIQUES

This fractur was printed on a wood block carved by John Ritter of Reading, Pennsylvania and filled-in by hand. It retains its original watercolor and pen decoration. The paper has folds and a lighter stripe down the center where it had been tucked away for many years (probably in the family Bible). An old maple frame protects the fractur. The  measurements including frame are 17 1/2" by 20 1/2", c. 1840.

The fractur is inscribed with German words. As was customary in Pennsylvania at that time, it was made in a printing press and hand decorated. This example was celebrating the birth of a child. Families kept this type of document in the Bible, document box or blanket chest.
